Animals, Alpine flowers, and ancient trees
Things to discover around Vent in summer
In summer, the Alpine landscape around Vent reveals its most stunning side – untamed, vibrant, and brimming with life.
When most of the snow has melted and the mountains surrounding the mountaineering village of Vent turn lush and green once again, you know you have come to one of the most beautiful times of the year: summer. It’s the perfect season for nature lovers to discover the diversity of the Ötztal Alps – raw, untouched, and filled with unexpected encounters.
If you’re out and about in the early morning or evening, there’s a good chance you’ll spot ibexes or nimble chamois making their way across the rocky mountain slopes. Curious marmots are also especially active now, their distinctive whistles echoing along the trails. And with a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of a bearded vulture or golden eagle soaring high overhead, their mighty wingspans (over two metres!) leaving onlookers in awe.
A truly special event occurs at the end of each summer: the annual transhumance, when thousands of sheep are herded over ancient mountain passes from South Tyrol to the high Alpine pastures surrounding Vent. This centuries-old migration isn’t just a living tradition – it’s recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and presents a moving experience for all who witness it.
In summer, Vent also reveals its botanical charm. The Alpine meadows burst into colour, with everything from vibrant Alpine roses to brilliant blue gentians that thrive even at 3,000 metres above sea level. Among the rugged rocks, the rare silver thistle blooms – a quiet star of the Alpine flora. All of this unfolds beneath the ancient canopy of Swiss stone pines and larches, whose gentle rustle and fresh scent invite you to slow down and breathe.
Whether you’re joining a flower walk, listening to nature, or spotting rare wildlife, summer is the season that showcases the wonders of the Alpine world like none other. On our guided hikes, you don’t just see nature – you feel it with every breath you take.
