Sheep drive to the summer quarters
Towards the sheep.....
On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the herd of approximately 2 200 sheep and 300 goats will be driven from Vernagt (1,700 m) over the Niederjoch (3,019 m) past the Similaun Hut to the Niedertal Alm. The first part of the herd will set off before dawn at around 3:00 a.m. So that you can experience the herd drive directly from the Similaun Hut, we will hike from Vent to the Similaun Hut the day before and spend the night there. Afterwards, we will follow the sheep back to Vent.
It’s considered one of the oldest and most spectacular sheep drives in the entire Alpine region: Around 2,000 sheep and 300 goats travel from Vernagt (1,700m) over the Niederjoch pass (3,019m) past the Similaun mountain hut, to the Niedertal-Alm.
We hike to the Similaun hut the day before and spend the night there, so that you can experience this event from early in the morning. We then hike behind the sheep back to Vent.
