A taste of autumn in Vent

Outside, the larches turn to gold. Inside, the scent of autumn fills the air – it’s the perfect time to slow down and savour the moment.

In Vent, autumn arrives gently. The larches turn to rustling gold, the air grows crisp, and the peaks catch the light in a way unique to this time of year. After the bustle of the mountain summer, a welcome calm settles over our mountaineering village at 1,900 metres above sea level. The days grow shorter, and evenings indoors become more inviting.

In Ötztal, autumn has always been synonymous with harvest. When the herds return from the Alpine pastures and preparations for winter begin, the mountain summer’s yield comes into its own. Our kitchen makes the most of it: seasonal produce from the valley, much of it from the family-owned Weinleinshof farm, with short distances from producer to plate and people we know behind every ingredient.

At our à la carte restaurant, Die Post – established in 1728, Head Chef Anna Pirpamer transforms the season into dishes full of pure autumn flavour: hearty soups, local game, mushrooms, pumpkin, and bread dumplings made according to age-old family recipes. Carefully prepared, well seasoned, and served without fuss.

And to drink? A good glass of wine. Many bottles on our list come from the south – and for good reason. For centuries, routes across the main Alpine ridge have linked the Ötztal valley with Schnalstal and South Tyrol beyond. Sheep travelled these paths, but so did goods, language, and flavours. A glass of Vernatsch or Lagrein with your game carries a little of that shared history. Our team will gladly recommend the right wine for your meal.

This may be the recipe for a perfect autumn day: a walk through golden larch forests, an aperitif in our Prostkastl umbrella bar as afternoon turns to evening, then dinner at Die Post, where time slows just a little.
