Holidays in the Austrian Alps: traditions in the Ötztal Valley

Driving the flocks over the mountains

During your holidays in the Austrian Alps, every day is a new mountain adventure; besides you will also experience our tradition of transhumance.

During your holidays in the Austrian Alps in June, you can witness the shepherds drive their sheep to the mountains. This year it takes place on the 10th of June 2017! On that date, over 2,000 sheep and 300 goats pass the Ötztal Alps and cross over to South Tyrol. One of the herds passes the Similaun mountain hut, the private hut of our hotel in Tyrol. Another one follows the route over Hochjoch mountain, nearby Hochjoch-Hospiz, which is also run by members of your host family.

If you are spending your holidays in the Austrian Alps in June, make sure to be there! The sheep are accompanied by drivers, shepherds and dogs. The crossing lasts about one to two hours. If you would like to experience this unique tradition nearby our resort in the Alps during your holidays in the Austrian Alps, we are happy to give you more advice about the starting points and the routes of the shepherds.
