Let’s learn about Franz Senn!

Why is hiking so popular in Tyrol?

Hiking and mountaineering are both vital sports in Tyrol. Why? From 1860, Franz Senn began laying the groundwork for these sports in rural Vent, Tyrol. Learn more below!

Hiking and mountaineering have become essential in Tyrolean tourism and culture. Taking a break from city life in the mountains is a crucial part of life that young and old partake in. But how did this idea become so valuable to Tyroleans? Around 1860, Franz Senn, a priest from a farming family, saw two things: the Ötztal Alps’ unspoilt beauty and the poverty of his parish people. So, he decided to enrich this region by establishing tourism through hiking and mountaineering. With some companions, his idea was to lay paths, trails, and build refuges in this unmapped area. In 1869, he founded the German Alpine Club (DAV) in Munich, becoming known as the founder of tourism in this region. Without Franz Senn, hiking and mountaineering in Tyrol wouldn’t be where they are today. Our hotel in Tyrol, Hotel Post in Vent, is not only part of this legacy but is also active in our community.
