5,300 years in ice
30 years on everyone’s lips
30 years and almost three months ago, the Simon couple from Germany made an extremely unusual find that went down in history.
It was 19th September 1991, and Luis Pirpamer was on his way back from Wildspitze when his son Markus called him and told him about a sensational, unbelievable find. Together, the father and son set off for the discovery site. The rest is marked down in the history books and this year Ötzi, who is over 5,300 years old, celebrates his 30th anniversary of discovery.
If you would like to learn more about the “iceman” during your skiing holiday in Ötztal, we recommend a visit to Ötzi Village in Umhausen. Ötzi Village, which is just a 40-minute trip by car from our Austrian Alps ski resort, displays various ancient finds and gives a good insight into the Stone Age. The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, where the ice mummy is exhibited, is also well worth a visit. We would be happy to accompany you personally on a hike to the Ötzi discovery site, which is only one hour away from our Similaun hut.
