Visit to our mountain huts
We, the Pirpamer family are passionate about the mountains and spend all our free time in the great outdoors and the Ötztal mountains. Our family has a long tradition of running mountain huts in the Ötztal valley.
Similaun mountain hut: The Simliaun mountain hut at 3,019 metres has been owned by our family for a long time. The Niederjoch pass nearby has been used as a passage between today’s North- and South Tyrol as early as the Copper Age, when Ötzi was alive. The mountain hut, which is managed by certified mountain- and ski guide Markus Pirpamer and his wife Ulli, is known for its acclaimed cuisine and excellent wine. We highly recommend you to visit this hut and the site where Ötzi the iceman was found during your hiking holidays in the Austrian Alps. You will pass this phenomenal spot also if you are hiking on the trail E5 (long-distance hiking trail from Lake Constance to Venice).

Hochjoch Hospiz: Mountain-hut host and certified mountain- and ski guide Thomas Pirpamer and his wife Denise await you here in the oldest hut of the Ötztal valley at 2,413 metres. Hochjoch Hospiz is easily reachable from the Ötztal valley and from South Tyrol; in fact this area is the ideal destination for hiking holidays in the Ötztal Alps thanks to its manifold tours.

Are you already familiar with the term “transhumance”, i.e. when the shepherds drive their sheep from the valley to the Alpine pastures and back? Every year in the beginning of June the shepherds bring their flock (with up to 4,000 sheep) from Val Venosta/Vinschgau and Val Senales/Schnalstal to the Alpine pastures on Hochjoch and Niederjoch in the Vent valley. In the beginning of September it is the other way round and shepherds and sheep head back home to the valley.
